What happens at that contact point — on a scale of a few micrometres — determines friction, generated heat, component wear and the surface quality of the drawn wire.

The parameter that describes this interface is roughness, measured as Ra. It is a technical figure that is often underrated, yet it is one of the factors that separate a stable, fast line from one prone to micro-damage and frequent stoppages. Understanding what Ra is and how it is controlled is the first step to optimizing any wire drawing process.

Want to improve your wire finish and reduce friction on components? Contact the Paganoni technical team for an assessment of your line.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE▸ How material innovation is revolutionizing the wire drawing industry▸ Wolside® vs Kerblack®: which coating should you choose for your wire drawing line

What Ra roughness is and why it matters

Roughness is the measure of a surface’s micro-irregularities: no machined surface is perfectly smooth, and the Ra parameter expresses their average amplitude. Technically, the Ra value is the arithmetic mean of the profile deviations from the mean line, and it is expressed in micrometres (μm). The lower the Ra value, the smoother and more uniform the surface.

In wire drawing this figure is no cosmetic detail. The surface of the component the wire runs on is the physical seat of friction: a controlled finish, with a very low Ra, allows uniform and predictable contact between wire and surface, reducing micro-damage and localized overheating. For components destined for wire drawing, therefore, a low Ra value is not an optional requirement but a design specification, as important as the hardness or wear resistance of the material.

Find out more about Paganoni and its specialization in wire drawing.

The link between roughness and friction

The coefficient of friction describes the resistance two surfaces offer to sliding against each other. In wire drawing, high friction between wire and component means more heat, more wear and higher energy consumption; controlled friction means smooth flow and consistent quality.

Roughness and friction are closely linked: a surface with high Ra presents more irregular contact points, which increase friction and the risk of micro-abrasions on the wire. Lowering the component’s Ra is therefore one of the most direct levers to reduce the coefficient of friction, improve wire flow and preserve its surface integrity.

There is a knock-on effect on heat and energy, too. Friction turns part of the mechanical work into heat, which builds up at the contact point: higher temperatures accelerate wear, stress the lubricant and can alter the wire surface. A lower coefficient of friction, achieved through a controlled finish, reduces the heat generated and makes it possible to increase production speed while keeping the quality of the finished product constant.

Dig into the comparison between our coatings in Wolside® vs Kerblack®.

What happens when the surface degrades

With use, the working surface of components wears down and its Ra tends to worsen. The finish is no longer uniform, friction rises and, with it, wire heat and wear. It is a self-reinforcing cycle: the more the surface degrades, the more aggressive the contact becomes, and the faster degradation accelerates.

The consequences are tangible: a decline in the wire’s surface quality, micro-damage, uneven component wear and, in the worst cases, unplanned machine downtime. Keeping Ra low and stable over time means breaking this cycle at the root.

See how to keep capstans performing in How to extend the service life of your capstans with the right coatings.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE▸ Capstans in drawing processes: functionality and optimisation▸ How to extend the service life of your capstans with the right coatings

How Paganoni coatings control Ra

The coatings and technical materials developed by Paganoni are designed precisely to ensure a low roughness value on the contact surface, drastically reducing the coefficient of friction. In wet drawing and acid environments you can add rings for copper-plating tanks, copper and aluminium roughing dies, multi-groove rollers for multi-wire machines and sheaves: here Kersint®, a sintered ceramic material, combines a very low Ra with resistance to chemical corrosion. On copper annealing lines, finally, the Niksint® nickel coating combines corrosion protection with surface stability in in-line annealing furnaces.

For copper annealing lines, discover Niksint®.

Keeping Ra low over time: recovery and checks

A low initial Ra must be preserved throughout the component’s life.
